Deep Space 1 using its Ion Engine . NASA's New Millennium Deep Space 1 spacecraft approaching the comet Borelly. The large solar panels on this spacecraft convert sunlight into electricity to power the xenon ion engine at the back end of the vehicle. The ion engine can provide a total velocity change to the spacecraft of 4,500 meters per second while using only about 80 kg of propellant.
